The City could have four fewer gaslights if a group of Kennedy Heights residents have their way.
A group of 28 residents of Kirkup Avenue have petitioned the City to have all four of its gaslights removed and replaced with electric lighting.
A follow-up postcard survey verified the support of the street's residents, with no objections received.
No specific reason was given for the petition, though concerns about crime have been prevalent throughout the neighborhood.
The City generally opposes the removal of the gaslights due to their historic significance.
There is also an option to supplement the gaslights with electrical lighting, which was not pursued.
The petition is currently in front of the Vibrant Neighborhoods, Recreation and Public Services Committee and still must be approved by City Council.
No source of funding has been identified for the new lighting.
