A new group has been formed to make Newport a more bike-friendly city.
Bicycling Newport consists of local bicyclists and businesspeople whose goals include bicycle advocacy and education.
Jack Kerley of Bicycling Newport hopes that the city can eventually be named as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.
In Kentucky, only Louisville and Lexington have that designation.
If you bike in Newport, Kerley is seeking your comments at JKerley@zoomtown.com.
The group's next meeting is February 19 at 6 PM at the Newport branch of the Campbell County Library, 901 E 6th Street.

Hannaford units on the market again
The remaining 15 condos of the Hannaford in Newport have been re-listed.
Towne & County Realty House has put the units at 803 E 6th Street on the market for $140,000 to $305,000.
Chicago developer and restauranteur Larry Levy of the Levy Organization had listed them through Huff Realty in 2005 with varying degrees of success, eventually moving 15 of the 40 units.
A public auction last August produced disappointing results.
Prices on the units have been reduced this time around in an effort to move them quickly and to allow the developers to move on to other projects.
A model is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 PM to 4 PM.
The Hannaford building, designed by Samuel Hannaford and built in 1889, was originally the home of Our Lady of Providence High School and was most recently used as apartments and an extended-stay hotel.

Newport affordable housing photo update, 1/22/08
Even in the cold, cold rain, construction continues on scattered-site low income housing along Saratoga and Roberts streets in Newport.
The need for more affordable housing in Newport grew after the city's demolition of its riverfront housing projects in anticipation of the Ovation development.
The new construction is a collaborative effort between the Brighton Center, Inc. and the Housing Authority of Newport Kentucky.

Random projects photo update, 1/9/08
Here are photos of a few random projects that I have encountered, but didn't merit their own posts.

Columbia Tusculum
I still have no idea what this is (it appears to be townhomes), but it's at the corner of Columbia Parkway and Stanley Avenue, next to Starbucks.
A new home is being built by R John Construction at 485 Stanley Avenue.
A new home built by Boulder Construction at 467 Missouri Avenue looks completed.

SouthShore photo update: Perspective
On August 29, I posted several street-level pictures of the construction progress on the SouthShore condo project in Newport. (Link below.)
Due to access issues, it was kind of hard to tell just how massive the built footprint actually is.
Here's a photo I took on Tuesday from Mount Adams. It's hazy*, but you get the idea.

SouthShore photo update, 8/29/07
It looks like they've got the four-story garage structure pretty much built.
The completed project will also include two towers with about 150 condo units and an 80,000 square foot office building.*
Photographs taken Sunday, August 26, 2007. Click on each photo to enlarge it in a new browser window.
* A marina is still possible but has not yet been decided.

Newport receives $272,000 for Raymond Motors project
The go2newport website reports that the City of Newport has received $272,000 for their Raymond Motors Preservation and Trailhead Project.
The old Raymond Motors building at 5th and York streets will be moved to the corner of 10th and Saratoga streets and converted into a trailhead.
The refurbished building will contain an information kiosk and possibly a transportation museum.
The trailhead will allow people to park their cars and access the bike paths on the Purple People Bridge, along KY-8, and along the future Riverfront Commons linear park.
The building, which is a surviving example of early automotive culture, had been slated for demolition.
