CPD District 3 HQ discussion continues Mar. 27

Public discussion on where a new Cincinnati Police Department District 3 headquarters should be located will continue on Mar. 27 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Elder High School's Schaeper Center, located at 4005 Glenway Avenue.

The project team will provide an update on the site selection process and will begin consideration of the design and possible public art components of the new $24 million, 40,000-square-foot facility.

The first public meeting, held Feb. 6, was attended by approximately 90 people representing six of the 14 neighborhoods served by District 3.

At that meeting, 11 preliminary sites were narrowed down to five: 1046-1048 Considine Avenue, 1945 Dunham Way, 2300 Ferguson Road, Hawthorne Avenue (south of the current headquarters), and the former Midway School.

Attendees were able to comment on the strengths and challenges of each of the five sites, comment on how they envisioned the structure interacting with the neighborhood, and suggest additional sites for consideration. Nearly 20 additional sites were suggested.

City staff also has received more than 40 recommendations for the future use of the current headquarters, located at 3201 Warsaw Avenue and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1908 to accommodate a staff of 40 officers, the 10,602-square-foot building now houses 161 officers, plus staff, and has been deemed structurally and technologically obsolete. It also lacks sufficient parking, community and storage space, and is not ADA-compliant.

By late spring, Police Chief James Craig is expected to make his recommendation to City Manager Milton Dohoney, Jr. Property acquisition and design and permitting would be completed by this summer, with a groundbreaking this fall.

The new building would be open by spring 2015 and would be the department's first new headquarters since completion of its District 4 facility in Paddock Hills in 1971.

District 3 serves more than 95,000 residents and encompasses approximately 20 square miles and includes the neighborhoods of East Price Hill, East Westwood, English Woods, Lower Price Hill, Millvale, North Fairmount, Riverside, Sayler Park, Sedamsville, South Cumminsville, South Fairmount, the Villages at Roll Hill, West Price Hill, and Westwood.
