E Mitchell to get bike lane this summer

A bike lane is coming to E Mitchell Avenue in Cincinnati this summer, providing a safer ride for bicyclists traveling uphill eastbound.

The bike lane will be installed between Wess Park Drive and Red Bud Avenue, repaved last year in a joint project between the City and the City of St. Bernard, which owns the northern half of the roadway.

A study conducted as part of Cincinnati's 2010 Bicycle Transportation Plan suggested that bike lanes could be installed on both sides of the street if on-street parking were limited to only one side.

St. Bernard was quite vocal in its opposition to a bike lane due to the loss of on-street parking. The North Avondale Neighborhood Association voted to support the project at its meeting in February.

On-street parking will be removed from the eastbound lanes, but will still be available westbound.

The E Mitchell Avenue bike lane is seen as a key connection between the bike lanes on Spring Grove and Dana avenues. The City's Department of Transportation and Engineering currently is studying the feasibility of extending the bike lane from Red Bud Avenue to Clinton Springs Avenue.
