Universities are rapidly becoming major drivers of economic development in our cities, and they're using that strength to remake the neighborhoods surrounding them.
In the February 27 Wall Street Journal, Nick Timiraos explains that in a highly-competitive atmosphere, universities feel the need to remake their environs "attractive and exciting college towns" to lure top faculty and students.
The article highlights projects at the University of Pennsylvania, Case Western Reserve University, the University of Maryland and NYU - large-scale, multi-million redevelopments that aren't without controversy from both school officials and community leaders.
Locally, both the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University have actively engaged the community to cooperate on redevelopment around their campuses.
