Governing: The Walkability Revival

Is there a renewed interest in walkable urban spaces?

In the February issue of Governing, Alan Ehrenhalt seems to think so.

Ehrenhalt cites as examples lower Manhattan, which is quickly becoming a residential neighborhood; and Legacy Center in Plano, Texas, a walkable town center development built on a metropolitan rail line 15 miles from Dallas - on land where no one has walked for decades.

However, he cautions that demand for walkable spaces may soon outpace supply unless current zoning laws are seriously addressed.

The CityKin blog had a related post on walkable communities yesterday.
