Bike share plan could come next month, launch next summer

An implementation plan for a bike sharing system in Cincinnati's urban core could begin next month.

An update on the Bike Share Feasibility Study, launched in November 2011 and being conducted by the City and Alta Planning + Design, was presented to City Council's Major Infrastructure and Transportation Projects Subcommittee on Monday.

This month, the study team will perform a business model assessment and demand forecast, which will inform the schedule and necessary steps necessary to launch the program.

Self-service bike sharing stations utilize credit or debit cards, allowing users to rent bicycles and ride between stations, returning bicycles to docking stations throughout the City.

Proponents of bike sharing believe that it reduces the barriers to cycling, promotes healthy lifestyles, and reduces automobile usage – especially for short trips.

If adopted, the program could begin next summer Downtown, in Over-the-Rhine, and in the Uptown neighborhoods.

This year, the City of Cincinnati was named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, recognizing the City's public outreach and advocacy as part of the City's 2010 comprehensive Bike Transportation Plan.
