HGC certified as green contractor, joins elite group

HGC Construction has been named a Certified Green Contractor by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the first construction company in the Tri-State and one of only 27 nationally to receive such certification.

ABC's Green Contractor Certification program recognizes construction companies that implement green and sustainable practices and principles both inside and out of the workplace.

HGC Construction was selected following an application process and a third-party on-site assessment. The company was required to fulfill 13 prerequisites and 12 of 36 elective items, including a professional energy audit, water conservation efforts, and incentives for carpooling or using public transportation.

The company was also required to achieve four education and training benchmarks, such as instructing employees on sustainability issues and requiring at least 25 percent of its managers to receive green building awareness education.

Headquartered in Cincinnati and in business since 1931, HGC Construction has won a National Pyramid Award for Excellence in Construction from ABC for Parvis Lofts on Vine (2010) and the Historic Vine Street Village at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden (2009).

Other recent projects include the LEED Platinum renovation of Emersion Design's offices, the LEED Silver Lofts of Mottainai in Over-the-Rhine's Gateway Quarter, and the Civic Garden Center's Green Learning Station, currently under construction and seeking LEED Gold certification.
