NY Times: Green buildings don't have to be new

A recent article in the New York Times real estate section gives details on the growing trend of retrofitting existing building with green elements to obtain LEED certification.

According to the article, more than 60 properties have received the certification and 840 more are in the process since the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released its updated standards last October.

The USGBC is even working with 40 large companies to make all of the buildings in their portfolios certified.

One caveat - this piece appeared in a section devoted to corporate commercial real estate, which is why it fails to mention the difficulty in gaining preservation tax credits for LEED projects of a smaller scale.
