UC's News Record reports that UC's Solar Decathlon team finished fifteenth out of twenty teams at the international competition held this year on the National Mall.
The solar house is the product of a contest called the Solar Decathlon, an international competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy in which only 20 universities were selected to participate.
The project, which began in April, involved about 200 students from the College of Business; the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning; and the College of Engineering.
The house judged the most innovative and efficient in using the sun's power to supply all of its energy needs was the entry by Technische Universität Darmstadt of Germany. The University of Maryland took second place, and Santa Clara University took third.
The UC team ranked fifth in the Architecture category and ninth in Hot Water, but ranked in the bottom quartile in all other categories.
UC plans to compete in the 2010 Solar Decathlon, which will be held in Spain.
