EDC to consider Pleasant Ridge diagnostic hospital

The City's Economic Development Committee will hold a public hearing on a zoning change that would allow an unidentified operator to open a diagnostic hospital in Pleasant Ridge.

The unidentified hospital operator would move into the building at 5500 Verulam Avenue, which has been vacant since 2004.

Because the current zoning is RM-1.2 Residential Multi-Family, which doesn't allow hospitals, the applicant is seeking a zoning change to IR Institutional-Residential District.

The IR zoning designation would also prevent future owners of the property from developing it for commercial uses and would require any new construction to be buffered from the nearby residential areas.

The diagnostic hospital would provide behavioral health care for residents of nearby nursing homes. Patients would stay for seven to ten days.

Work on the interior of the structure would provide between 21 and 28 large patient suites.

The hospital would employ 85.

The City Planning Commission approved of the rezoning on October 5. The Pleasant Ridge Community Council voted to support the rezoning on August 7.

11 AM. Room 300, City Hall.
