PC to consider hospital for vacant Pleasant Ridge building

On Friday the City Planning Commission will consider a zoning change that would allow an unidentified operator to open a diagnostic hospital in Pleasant Ridge.

The diagnostic hospital would provide behavioral health care for residents of nearby nursing homes. Patients would stay for seven to ten days.

The name of the applicant has not been made public. Attempts to reach City planning staff and the Pleasant Ridge Community Council were unsuccessful.

The applicant is seeking a zoning change to IR Institutional-Residential District. The current zoning of the site is RM-1.2, which does not allow hospitals.

The IR zoning designation would also prevent future owners of the property from developing it for commercial uses and would require any new construction to be buffered from the nearby residential areas.

The building at 5500 Verulam Avenue was last occupied by the Ridge Pavilion nursing home, which closed in 2004.

Work on the interior of the structure would provide between 21 and 28 large patient suites.

The Pleasant Ridge Community Council voted to support the rezoning on August 7.

The hospital would employ 85.
