City, CPS to swap land

The City of Cincinnati has agreed to a land swap with the Board of Education of Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) that will allow for the expansion of two projects.

The City will receive 2.5 acres of the former Whittier School property at 945 Hawthorne Avenue in East Price Hill, which the Cincinnati Recreation Commission will use in conjunction with the adjoining Dempsey Playground.

In return, CPS will receive 0.55 acres of surplus property and a 0.06-acre easement from the Oyler sprayground at Burns and Storrs streets in Lower Price Hill, to be used for the expansion of Oyler School into a PK-12 community learning center.

Approved by the CPS board in April 2009, schematic designs for Oyler's expansion show the addition of a new gymnasium, relocation of the main offices, the conversion of the current gymnasium into music and art rooms, and new mechanical systems.

The project is tentatively scheduled to begin this summer.
