Butterfield Alley renamed for Van Volkenburgh

Butterfield Alley in Columbia Tusculum will be renamed Van Volkenburgh Lane following the passage of a Cincinnati City Council ordinance last week.

Named after John Van Volkenburgh, the alley runs between Stanley Avenue and Broughton Street, near the Columbia Square development.

Van Volkenburgh, who died in 2005, was a long-time neighborhood resident, advocate, and former director of the Columbia Tusculum Economic Development Corporation who was instrumental in working with the City and local real estate officials to get the project built.

As a consultant, he also assisted Hamilton County in the creation of a solid waste management plan. The Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District presents an annual award for recycling innovation in his honor.

Both the City Planning Commission and the Columbia Tusculum Community Council approved of the change.
