3412 Clifton Avenue, Clifton
Funeral home
DOB: 1900
Died: December 2008
Cause of death: Formerly the Anderson, Baiter & Sahnd Funeral Home, in 2004 the site was proposed for a new a redevelopment by former Clifton Town Meeting president Jack Brand of two small retail buildings totalling 6,200 square feet -- one with a drive-through -- with 32 parking spaces.
A later proposal called for a four-story building with ground-floor retail and 12 apartments above.
Throughout 2004 and 2005, Clifton residents and business leaders circulated petitions to save the building as a town hall, historical museum, or other civic use.
The City's zoning hearing examiner eventually gave conditional permission for the structure, but, for some reason, the proposal faded away.
In 2007, a fire started on the third floor of the building. The building continued to sit vacant, attracting graffiti and litter and generally blighting the neighborhood.
Brand still owns the lot.
